Rates

Light Copyediting (baseline editing)     $30.00/hr.

• Checking and correcting spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Correcting incorrect usage of certain words (can vs. may or effect vs. affect)
• Checking cross-references (to tables, figures, or other locations in the text)
• Ensuring consistency throughout (spelling, hyphenation, numerals, fonts and capitalization).
• Reviewing all sequences (alphabetical or numerical order) in lists.

Baseline editing does not involve fundamental re-working of content (smoothing transitions, altering phrases, or material rearrangement of text).

Medium Copyediting     $35.00/hr.

• Performing all tasks for baseline editing.
• Altering text and headings for the sake of unity.
• Flagging inappropriate figures of speech (jargon or awkward use of the vernacular).
• Ensuring that key terms are handled consistently and that the vocabulary lists and the index perform adequately, meeting the publisher's criteria.
• Checking previews, summaries, and end-of-chapter questions to insure that they reflect content.
• (In a multi-author manuscript) Enforcing consistent style and tone.
• Removing use of the passive voice.
• Discovering and correcting ambiguous or incorrect statements.
• Typemarking the manuscript.

Heavy Copyediting (substantive editing)     $40.00/hr.

• Performing all tasks for medium copyediting.
• Eliminating wordiness and inappropriate language.
• Improving readability.
• Making substantive alterations in the organization of the text for the sake of logical structure.
• Adding or deleting text (either by suggestion or by deliberate action) where appropriate.  

Rush jobs and work solicited during weekends or vacation periods, $5 extra per hour. Original compositions will be priced upon request.
